Prateeksha Lonkar is an Indian Marathi film and television actress.[1] She is best known for playing the lead title role in Marathi TV serial Damini that aired on DD Sahyadri.[2]
Lonkar was born in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Her father was a doctor and her mother a teacher. After finishing her schooling till 10th, she opted for Arts and followed her interest in theater.[2]
Lonkar moved to Mumbai for boosting her acting career. She worked in various TV serials both in Marathi and Hindi language. After playing the lead role of Damini on the TV show of same name on DD Sahyadri, she came to be known for it.[2][3] Her Hindi TV serial Kahaani Nahi.... Jeevan Hai was remade as Vasudha in Marathi. She played the lead role in both serials.[4] Since June 2012 she appearing as Yashoda Vaishnav in Byaah Hamari Bahoo Ka.[5]
Along with TV serials, she has also worked in many Marathi and Hindi films. Her portrayal of Sudha, a mother who is separated from her son after her divorce, in the Marathi film Bhet (2002) won her awards and appreciation.[6] She played a mother of a young boy in 2007 film Aevdhe Se Aabhaal where her son is not able to cope up with his parent's divorce and his mother's remarriage. She has acted in several Bollywood film, including four films directed by Nagesh Kukunoor viz. Iqbal, Dor, Aashayein and Mod.
She has also worked in few Marathi plays.
Sudha Chandran is an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer, Indian film and television actress, who turned to acting following the loss of a leg in an accident in May 1981 near Trichy, Tamil Nadu.
Sudha was born in 21 September 1964.[1] She earned her B.A from Mithibai College, Mumbai and subsequently an M.A in Economics. In 1981, while traveling from there to the South during pilgrimage via the scindia school in Tamil Nadu, she met with an accident, because of which she had to have her right leg amputation as doctors missing her wound (a cut) in her ankle and by putting plaster on it and covered her leg, leading to infection in the wound. After two weeks when she returned to Madras to review, the doctors cut open the plaster to realize that she had been affected by gangrene and there was no alternative other than to amputate her leg. She has said that this period was the toughest time of her life. She subsequently overcame her disability with the help of a prosthetic 'Jaipur foot', becoming one of the most highly acclaimed dancers of the Indian subcontinent.[2] She received invitations from all over the world for performances. She was honored with various awards after she performed as far away from home as Europe, Canada and the Middle East. Soon after she catapulted to fame and recognition by venturing into the world of films and television.One fact about her is she has become more famous after she has lost her leg dancing with a single leg and an artificial leg.Now she has become more inspiration to many of the disabilities where they can still achieve their goals without losing their hopes.There was even a inspirational story about her as a lesson for school students which will motivate them to reach there goal.
The 1984 Telugu film Mayuri in which she plays herself was inspired by her lifetime story. The 1986 film Nache Mayuri was a Hindi remake of the Telugu original, in which the cast was changed except for Sudha to suit the North Indian sensibilities. She was awarded the 1986 Special Jury Award at the National Film Awards for her performance in Mayuri.[3]
In the serial, Kaahin Kissii Roz, she portrayed the character of "Ramola Sikand" which became an instant hit. She is considered to be one of the more flamboyant stars on Indian television, known for her avant garde sarees, chunk jewellery and designer bindis.
Since then she has acted in several TV shows such as K Street Pali Hill in which she played the character of Gayatri Kaul. She also portrayed the role of a rich brat's mother in Kuch Iss Tara which was telecast on Sony TV. Recently, she has participated in 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa' on Sony TV. She has also acted in a Tamil serial broadcast on Sun TV, titled 'Kalasam' for the role of the antagonist Chandramathi and had Ramya Krishnan in the lead role. She is now into the role of 'Madurai Thilakavathy' in Sun TV's Tamil serial 'Arasi' which has Radhika Sarathkumar in lead role. She plays a lawyer in that serial. Dance appears to be her passion, so much so that she has established a dance academy in Mumbai, ‘Sudha Chandran Academy of Dance', which has branches all over Mumbai and Pune. Ravikumar Dang, Sudha's husband is the executive director of the school. Sudha is often cited as a symbol of "will power".She is also one among the judges in popular reality show Super Dancer Junior Series on Amrita TV.[4]
